Exceptional Student Education   Mrs. Beth Murphy, ESE Specialist

The Exceptional Student Education Specialist at Terrace Community Middle School supervises, coordinates, and monitors school-wide ESE services and documents.  This is done in compliance with federal, state, and TCMS  board policies and procedures.  We are assisted by the district with the identification, evaluation, and placement of eligible ESE students in the least restrictive environment.  In addition, ESE services offer support and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and parents.

As a school of choice, TCMS and the ESE department provide services to ESE and gifted students that maximize their participation in our advanced and honors curriculum offered in the general education classroom.  This is accomplished primarily through consultative services, which consist of monthly meeting between the ESE Specialist and each grade level team, in order to discuss appropriate academic progress.  Every gifted student with an Education Plan (EP) enrolled at TCMS is placed in the consultative model.  In addition, after meeting with the IEP team to discuss individual student needs, highly compensating, academically successful students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may also be placed on consult. Consult services allow us to monitor your student’s satisfactory academic progress towards their EP and IEP goals.  It also ensures proper monitoring and of IEP instructional and testing accommodations implemented in the general education classroom.

In addition to consultative services, TCMS provides the following ESE services:

  • a weekly learning strategies pull-out program for IEP students who are performing below grade level in reading or math
  • Speech and language therapy provided by a privately contracted speech pathologist.
  • Students are pulled from electives for more supportive services.

IF YOUR CHILD HAS AN IEP, it is extremely important and highly encouraged, that you contact the ESE Specialist in order to discuss their ESE needs, and whether or not this is the appropriate school choice for them.
