Development Committee Meeting

Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Room 200

6PM

In attendance:  Mr. Gary Hocevar, Mr. Vinny Medero, Mr. Thomas Ries, Ms. Jackie, Mrs. Margie Lanoue, Mrs. Nancy Hutson and Mr. Grant Martin

1.                  Call to Order – Mr. Medero called the meeting to order at 6:05.  He thanked all the board members attending the meeting and discussed the objective of the group was to help raise funds.  Mr. Hocevar confirmed that the funds that were needed were capital funds, i.e. the building construction and furnishings are needed.  Mr. Hocevar stated that the school needs $500K to furnish the classrooms.  The land costs were $1.4M and the building currently is expected to cost $2.8M to construct.

2.                  Discussion - Mr. Martin provided information concerning fundraising in general.  For grants: 85% typically are from individuals,10% corporations, and 5% are from foundations  He suggested that the Tampa Bay Community Foundation is a good group to network with in looking for funding sources.  He stated that we have a great “story”...TCMS’s educational accomplishments have secured the $2.8M for construction and now need at least $500K to furnish and operate the school.  He also suggested that we ask for the total needs: $5M (land, construction costs and furnishing), there may be someone that is willing to provide this especially for naming rights, which leads to a need for a naming policy to ensure TCMS doesn’t get a name it can’t live with.

3.                  Requests - The committee asked Mr. Hocevar to provide some of the items he has used in the past for potential fund raising activities:

·        PowerPoint Presentation on the school

·        Stats on enrollment, diversity and income level

·        What sets us apart from other middle schools

·        Achievements

·        Etc.
